How to Change your Life (without leaving your bed)

When you're determined to change but find yourself stuck, it's time to get reprogrammed —by your own mind. Like a crisp, chocolate chip cookie in cold milk, dunk yourself in an information bath of your choosing.

And the best part?

You can do this while relaxing on your cozy couch or tucked into bed. Here’s how.

Your psychological command center.

YouTube for the Win

I've been following a YouTuber named Dr. K, who runs the channel HealthyGamerGG. Though I'm hardly the typical viewer—I haven't played video games regularly since the Atari era in the '80s—I find his practical, actionable advice incredibly useful.

Internal Change: The Prelude to Action

In one of his videos, [here], he discusses the "science of change." He emphasizes two points that resonated with me:

  • the importance of educating yourself

  • the need to avoid overdoing it.

Less Is More

Dr. K points out that change happens internally before it manifests externally; we are persuaded to change before we take any action

This means you can effectively fuel your motivation from the comfort of your bed, whether through listening to podcasts, reading books, or watching videos. The key is to consume this motivational content in moderation—savor it slowly, like hot tea, instead of bingeing on it.

Podcasts, videos, and books are all super

Rather than hand you a list of my personal go-to resources that helped me break free from an unhealthy relationship and start owning my life, I’m going to point you towards three critical areas to explore:

Self Repair

I believe that at the core of procrastination, there's often a thread leading back to unresolved trauma. It's a critical angle, yet it's not universally accepted.

Trauma exists on a spectrum; not everyone faces the same challenges or acknowledges their impact.

Health and fitness (mental, emotional, and physical)

As a health coach, I'm all in on whole body health. You can't slice your mind away from your body—they're in this together. And just how much your emotions run the show plays a massive role in your overall health.

I must admit, I still struggle with physical exercise. While I can talk about feelings and emotions until the cows come home, it's clear I still have a long way to go when it comes to herding those Holsteins back into the barn using my body.

Productivity and personal finance

Time and money, along with how you feel about them, deeply influence your health. When you're feeling terrible, your finances wobble, and time management becomes a struggle.

And yep. Financial planning is another weakness I need to work on.😅

"OK," you say, "I can do the research. I can listen and read. But WHEN will I actually start doing something about it?"

If you're feeling this level of frustration, that's both good and bad.

It's great that you're thinking about change, but it's not so great that you're rushing it. You need to let things happen naturally.

Easy Does It

As you lie in bed, envision what you want.

Ask yourself what scares you and think about how you would advise a friend in the same situation. Don't be harsh with yourself; offer encouragement instead.

You might wonder, "Aren't you just giving me an excuse to be lazy?"

Not at all. Change is erratic—it zigs and zags. Stay the course. The answers will come, and your path will clear, as long as you don't give up.

Idle discomfort

Eventually, the sting of sitting still will outweigh the comfort of inaction. You’ll start to believe there’s a real way forward. That’s your cue to find support –don’t let the momentum slip away.
